Intent
At Wrestlingworth and Dunton Federation, we believe in educating the children to become healthy individuals with the want to be physically active.
We aim to develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding of PE and sports and what makes a healthy, active lifestyle.
Our PE curriculum is underpinned by a very inclusive philosophy in which we aim for every child to be engaged.
We provide a very wide range of opportunities to promote positive values with a wealth of varied activities, this ensures that our PE curriculum is highly inclusive.
Aspects of PE are thread through the curriculum to promote thinking, selecting and applying skills and positive attitudes towards a healthy lifestyle.
Implementation
PE at Wrestlingworth and Dunton Federation provides challenging, engaging and enjoyable learning through a range of sporting activities including; Dance, Gymnastics, Net and Wall games, Invasion games, Striking and Fielding games, Athletics and for KS2 Swimming.
Our progression of skills and long term plan sets out the PE objectives which are taught to promote thinking, encourage the practising of skills, and apply them in game situations. These have been carefully mapped out and ensure that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
The children participate in high quality PE lessons each week, covering two different units every half term. Lessons are taught by Premier Sports coaches to ensure high quality teaching. Our teachers access CPD and specific lesson planning developed by Premier Sport to support their development of knowledge and skills in PE teaching.
In addition to the PE lessons at Wrestlingworth and Dunton Federation, children can attend the varied range of extra-curricular activities. Sports Clubs are run after school allowing the children the opportunity to participate in a range of different sports. The clubs are open to all year groups and are very popular.
At break times and lunch times the children have the option of playing with a wide range of different equipment which enables them to practise and apply different skills. Our Climbing and Traversing Wall equipment in the playground has been carefully designed to help develop fine and gross motor skill and has different levels of challenge.
Throughout the year, children are invited to attend competitive sporting events by East Beds Schools Sports Partnership within the local area. There are a range of festivals and competitions that take an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental wellbeing. They work alongside our school values and develop teamwork and leadership skills. They have been very popular with lots of teams competing at county level.
Impact
Our PE provision leads to consistently high levels of achievement for all pupils. Clear assessment procedures enable teachers to closely monitor progress and identify areas where additional support or challenge is required. We track pupils’ progress against age-related expectations and ensure that interventions are put in place to address any gaps in learning. As a result, our students develop the skills, confidence, and knowledge necessary to succeed in various physical activities and make strong progress throughout their primary education.
Physical activity is a key part of our Wrestlingworth and Dunton school day and the children enjoy taking part in movement breaks throughout the day. We find that physical activity has a positive impact on children’s mental health, their ability to focus and their overall learning outcomes in all subject areas. We strive for children to be active for 60 minutes of the school day to develop their physical literacy. We also thread physical activity though our learning in English, Maths and the wider curriculum areas, by enabling children to use physical movement to enhance their knowledge acquisition, memory retention and academic progress.
Our PE curriculum fosters valuable personal and social development in our students. By participating in activities that require teamwork, leadership, and resilience, children develop essential life skills that go beyond the physical aspect of PE. We create a nurturing environment where pupils grow in confidence, self-esteem, and self-discipline. Children are encouraged to set personal goals, reflect on their achievements, and take ownership of their learning, laying a foundation for life-long learning and personal growth.
Our intent is focused on developing physically literate individuals who understand the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle. Through the implementation of our well-structured curriculum, inclusive provision, qualified staff, wider opportunities, cross-curricular links, and emphasis on health and well-being, the impact is evident in high achievement, healthy lifestyle habits, and personal development of our pupils.
Our School Vision
It is imperative throughout our PE curriculum that our school vision is reflected-
From the smallest seeds grow the biggest trees
OUR CHRISTIAN VISION
“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed. A man plants the seed in his field. That seed is the smallest of all seeds. But when it grows, it is one of the largest garden plants. It becomes a tree, big enough for the wild birds to come and make nests in its branches.”
Matthew 13:31-32, International Children’s Bible
We believe each child is like a mustard seed, growing and thriving in our Church school family. All children are nurtured here and flourish through our teaching and care. We empower children to seek out the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of life; children are inspired to be the best that they can be. Everyone is valued and able to grow in the love of God.
Whoever you are, you are welcome here.
