British Values

At Wrestlingworth Infant and Dunton Junior School Federation, British Values are embedded throughout the curriculum and daily life, providing a strong foundation for our pupils’ personal development. We foster an environment where values such as democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance are not just taught but actively practiced. Children are encouraged to understand their role within the community, participate in decision-making processes, and respect the rights of others. Through engaging lessons, collaborative activities, and school-wide events, our pupils develop a deep appreciation for these principles, helping them become responsible and respectful citizens of both the school and the wider society.

Democracy:

We encourage our children to actively participate in decision-making process through regular school elections such as voting for members of the school council. These elections promote first-hand the value of democracy, where each vote counts and everyone has an opportunity to share their opinions. In addition, we foster open dialogue in the classroom, where pupils are encouraged to express their ideas, debate respectfully and listen to others. By practicing democracy in school, we help pupils develop the skills they need to contribute thoughtfully and responsibly to society.

Rule of law:

Our children will encounter rules and laws throughout their lives, both in school and beyond. We want them to understand that whether these rules apply to the classroom, the school, the local community, or the wider society, they are in place for important reasons. By respecting and following these laws, our pupils learn to contribute to a safe, fair, and harmonious environment for everyone.

Individual liberty:

Across our federation, individual liberty is about empowering pupils to make choices and take responsibility for their actions, while respecting the rights and freedoms of others. Children are encouraged to express their opinions and make decisions in a safe and supportive environment. This might include having a voice in class discussions or setting personal learning goals. We also teach our children about their rights through the PSHE curriculum, helping them understand the balance between freedom and responsibility. Through these opportunities, we promote self-confidence, independence and respect for diversity, ensure that our children can grow as a thoughtful and responsible individual.

Mutual respect and tolerance:

We teach children to respect each other’s differences, whether it’s in terms of culture, religion or personal beliefs. Through our RE Syllabus, children learn about the main religions. Through classroom discussions, activities and Collect Worships, children learn the importance of accepting and celebrating diversity. Children are encouraged to show kindness and empathy, supporting each other both in and out of the classroom.
